WHAT IS A COMMUNITY COLLEGE?

A Community College is democratization of education, ‘for the community, by the community and of the community’. It offers educational opportunities to all sections of society, particularly the marginalized and the disadvantaged. A community can be income group base, region based; trade or occupation based. Crescent Foundation has chosen to serve the rural community primarily engaged in agriculture. Agriculture covers disguises lot unemployment. It is said that 70 percent Indians work in the fields. But the truth is that the entire work can be achieved through half of that number. It leaves 35% of our working force in disguised unemployment.


The need of the day is to take these men and women out of their unproductive employment and train them for the skills in demand.


A major contribution of Community Colleges at different parts of the world has been to extend access to postsecondary studies for millions of students who would otherwise have been left out of Higher Education. The accessibility and affordability of the courses offered by the Community College makes it a preferable option. In countries like the US and Canada, where Community Colleges had started as supplement to mainstream higher education system, today approximately 44% of all undergraduates there study in Community Colleges reflects the importance and popularity of such institutions.


The Community College is an alternative system of education, which is aimed at the empowerment of the disadvantaged and the underprivileged & especially Urban and Rural Poor and Women through appropriate skills development leading to gainful employment in collaboration with the local industry and the community and achieve skills for employment and self employability of the above sections of people in the society. The Community College is an innovative educational alternative that is rooted in the community providing holistic education and eligibility for employment to the disadvantaged.


The Community College promotes job oriented, work related, skill - based and life coping education The Community College initiative is in conformity with the Indian political will that prioritizes in education, primary education, information technology education and vocational education.
The highlights of the Community College system are accessibility and flexibility in curriculum and teaching methodology, cost effectiveness and equal opportunity in collaboration with industrial, commercial and service sectors in the local area and responding to the social needs and issues of the local community. The focus is on internship and job, placement within the local area, promotion of self employment and small business development.
